As it was her birthday last week (July 1st - her 80th!), Debbie Harry seemed the perfect choice to kick off Today Girl's new project. Each week, we'll be highlighting one woman whose work and life has changed the world.
Debbie Harry, best known for being the lead singer of proto-punk band Blondie, hails from Hackettstown, NJ. Artistic recognitiion was not immediate. Music stayed her ultimate passion, but time was taken up by other attempts to scrap by. She moonlighted as a Playboy Bunny, a dancer, a model. Blondie broke through in 1978, when Harry was 33, with their still-hit single "Heart of Glass."
For me, Debbie Harry is not just a singer but a prophet. Her projects, no matter the medium, never fail to demostrate just how much she burns to make art. She's rebuked the burdens of age and gender, transcended through her pop culture influence into the echleons of Legend Status. Most importantly, her hair is perfect.
